Samuel Youn

Heldenbaritone Samuel Youn studied singing in Seoul, at Conservatorio G. Verdi in Milan and with Arthur Janzen at Musikhochschule Cologne. He has won several internationally renowned singing competitions among them Toti dal Monte (Treviso), Chung-Ang (Seoul), Franz Schubert (Genoa), Francesco Albanese (Naples), Riccardo Zandonai (Roverto) and Enrico Caruso (Milan).

Samuel Youn worked with conductors such as Zubin Meta, Christian Thielemann, Pierre Boulez, Semyon Bychkov, Markus Stenz, Peter Ruzicka, Philippe Jordan, Ralf Weikert, Will Humburg and Pinchas Steinberg. He celebrated his debut in the role of Mephisto / Faust (Gounod) at Teatro Comunale di Treviso and at Teatro di Rovigo. Further engagements brought him as Oroveso / Norma at the Conservatorio Sala Verdi di Milano and as Jochanaan / Salome at Teatro de la Maestranza (Seville), Teatro Petruzelli di Bari and Concertgebouw Amsterdam.

In 2004, he could be heard in Parsifal at Bayreuther Festspiele. In the next year, his debut as Reinmar von Zweter /Tannhäuser followed. In 2010, he sang the part of Heerrufer in a new production of Lohengrin. 2006/07, he gave Geisterbote / Die Frau ohne Schatten. 2008/09, the roles of Lindorf, Coppélius, Miracle, Dappertutto / Hoffmanns Erzählungen followed at Théatre du Capitole in Toulouse. Geisterbote / Die Frau ohne Schatten at Hamburgische Staatsoper and at Teatro Maggio Musicale Fiorentino followed.

Guest engagements have led him as Mephisto / Faust to Seoul, as Jochanaan to Athens, Modena and Bolzano. He sang Kurwenal / Tristan and Isolde at Opera Leipzig and Deutsche Oper Berlin. At the latter, he was also engaged to sing Sebastiano in d’Alberts Tiefland. His debut as Wanderer / Wotan in Siegfried followed at Teatro San Carlos in Lisbon and he could be heard in the part of Vier Bösewichter / Hoffmann’s Erzählungen at Theatre du Capitole in Toulouse. At Hamburgische Staatsoper, he sang Kaspar / Der Freischütz, Klingsor / Parsifal at Deutsche Oper Berlin and Geisterbote at Maggio Musicale Fiorentino under the baton of Zubin Meta. He has been guest as Dr. Schön / Lulu at Art Center Seoul Korea.

With the start of the season 1999/2000, Samuel Youn has been member of the ensemble at Opera Cologne. At Cologne, he sang among others the parts of Donner and Gunter / Ring des Nibelungen, Klingsor / Parsifal, Kurwenal / Tristan and Isolde, Orest / Elektra, Amonasro / Aida, Alfio / Cavalleria rusticana and Tonio / Pagliacci, Escamillo / Carmen, Kaspar / Freischütz and Bösewichter in Hoffmann’s Erzählungen.

Parallel to his engagement at Cologne, Youn celebrated successful roles such as Donner / Rheingold at Opera Nation de Paris, Orest / Elektra at Teatro Real in Madrid and Jochanaan / Salome at Teatro Piacenza and Teatro di Modena. In 2012, he gave his celebrated debut in Geisterbote / Die Frau ohne Schatten at Teatro alla Scala di Milano. He is also a frequent guest at Bayreuther Festspiele. His famous roles are Heerrufer / Lohengrin and Holländer / Der fliegende Holländer. Recently, he has been guest as Paolo Albiani / Simon Boccanegra at Opera de Nice and Oman, Donner at Opera National de Paris and Méphisto / Damnation de Faust at Deutsche Oper Berlin.

Future projects include his return for various productions to the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Bayreuth Festival, his debuts at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, with the Concertgebouw Orchestra and Chicago Lyric Opera,Teatro Real Madrid,Theater an der Wien.
